The Alchemists of Sound (Featuring an interstellar Thermos flask from Woolworths)

16 Aug

Here’s a documentary about the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. It was created in 1958 and was one of the sound effects units at BBC. Look out for the interstellar Thermos flask from Woolworths! Delia Derbyshire worked there in the 1960s and left in 1973. One of Delia’s favourite sounds was a green lampshade!

“My most beautiful sound at the time was a tatty green BBC lampshade,” she recalled. “It was the wrong colour, but it had a beautiful ringing sound to it. I hit the lampshade, recorded that, faded it up into the ringing part without the percussive start.”

-Delia Derbyshire

Enjoy!
