Whitworth In The Mix

Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Road, Manchester.

How do you DJ with music, art, archives and architecture? Manchester’s DJ Krysko and VJ G-Kut are turning the tables and DJing with the Whitworth Art Gallery. ‘Whitworth In The Mix’ will be a dynamic music and visual event inspired by the history of the Whitworth Art Gallery and its future as a 21st century gallery in a park. Krysko & …G-KUT will be DJ’ing and VJ’ing with art, music, time, space and architecture. The Whitworth at present is in a transitional period and new visionary ways of seeing the history and future of the gallery are being brought together. ‘Whitworth In the Mix’ looks at the relationship between music and visual arts and how the concept and practice of DJ’ing can be integrated into other unexpected contexts, using not only music but other art forms, objects and ideas. Come to experience a visual and sonic assemblage that animates the inside and outside spaces to reveal new ways of seeing, hearing and experiencing the Whitworth. There will also be guest appearances by some of Manchester’s finest DJ’s playing some fine warm up material. ‘Whitworth In The Mix’ will be the warm up event for ‘Warehouse Project and Annie Mac present…M/I.A (live), Annie Mac, Rusko, Sleigh Bells (live), Die Antwoord (live), Now Wave DJs, Andro and Will Tramp.’

Whitworth In The Mix is a Performing Rights Society (PRS) for Music Foundation New Music Plus 2010 series of productions happening at the Whitworth Art Gallery.

New Music Plus 2010 is a collaborative project between cultural organisations and music producers, taking place in the North West. The participating organisations are: Whitworth Art Gallery, Contact, Cornerhouse, Band on the Wall, TATE and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (joint hosts), FACT and Liverpool Biennial (joint hosts), National Museums Liverpool and Bluecoat.

Krysko… is Resident DJ at The Warehouse Project in Manchester, which has over the last six years become the UK’s most popular and highly respected music event for both world class DJs and Electronic live acts, drawing crowds of over 70,000 from September to December every year. Krysko is programming new music events and DJing with the Whitworth as part of New Music Plus, a PRS for Music Foundation project, with the Whitworth’s Producer, Naomi Kashiwagi. Krysko & Kashiwagi are pioneering a new way for music, art and galleries to be mixed and synthesised.

Naomi Kashiwagi… is an artist who looks for quirky uses of old technologies & everyday objects and DJs with wind-up gramophones. She has exhibited andperformed in UK, Finland, Germany and Switzerland. She won Best of Manchester Art Prize 2008 and art08 Individual Artist Award.

G Kut’s… ground-breaking work with the world’s first Technics DJ Academy in Manchester, led him to design the world’s first DJ qualification (now the industry standard), incorporating mixing, scratching, production and business skills. Not merely content with resting on his laurels, he is also busy writing a book on DJ technique. G Kut is far from your average scratch DJ. Currently testing and researching a new piece of software with the supernatural ability to manipulate any data – audio, video, html, flash (any digitized information) – with a view to making an “interactive scratch performance”, where the audience inputs the media which he will then scratch and sequence into what they see, hear and feel. Mastery of technical wizardry has not confined him to the studio totally, however, as can be verified by the extensive list of his past and current residences which include many great venues and events across the globe.

Warehouse Project and Annie Mac present…M/I.A (live), Annie Mac, Rusko, Sleigh Bells (live), Die Antwoord (live), Now Wave DJs, Andro and Will Tramp.

Surely this will be one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated nights of the entire 2010 Warehouse Project series, with MIA performing her unique live show on stage, joined by some incredible supports. One of the most original and important artists to emerge from the UK in the past 10 years, her politically conscious and sonically adventurous music has seen her rise from underground maverick to global superstar over the last few years, travelling the globe on sell out tours and nominated for two Grammy awards and even an Oscar nomination for her contributions to the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. MIA is an artist who we have been trying to get to WHP for a long time and this special event is set to be a real defining moment at the Warehouse.

Her latest album Maya is a typically diverse collection of music, taking in influences from punk, electro, hip-hop, dancehall and noisy experimentation. She has collaborated with the likes of Jay-Z, Diplo, Switch and Rusko, and runs her own record label N.E.E.T. with acts such as Rye Rye and Sleigh Bells. As well as a set by Annie Mac who co-hosts tonight as part of her annual ‘Annie Mac presents’ tour, dubstep pioneer Rusko will be dropping one of his trademark heavy sets, fresh from working with MIA on her new album.
